RSS Feeds

I remember some years back, hearing that one of my two readers uses an RSS feed of this blog.  I’ve never actually used RSS, but out of curiosity I installed a reader.  To my horror, my last article looked like this:

If you’re not a network engineer and my generation or older, “ATM” means Automatic Teller Machine. If you’re younger, you don’t know what that means because you’ve never paid for anything in cash. If you’re a network engineer of a certain age, ATM means something else: Asynchronous Transfer Mode. ATM was a potential god technology […]

I had no idea that articles were getting abbreviated.  I’m sure this is annoying for RSS people.

I’ve changed a setting that will hopefully prevent this.  It may also be the theme, in which case I’m due for one of my many theme changes.

I aim to please both of my readers.  I feel bad for the RSS guy anyways, since you probably never see the updates to my multitude of typos.

  1. Appreciate you taking the time to update it, but it doesn’t update it at all. If I like the site, I click the “external link” button to go to the site. If it’s just basic news or poorly formatted, then I read it in my RSS reader.

Most blog frameworks today, such as hugo, provide this abbreviated format so I’m sure more RSS hold-outs are used to it by now.

    1. I’ve actually installed Hugo and have been thinking about switching to it from WordPress. I hate WP for so many reasons but I’ve been using it since 2013 and so quite familiar with it. Still, I like the look of Hugo blogs better than any WP theme I can find. The other nice thing is that, while it’s my own installation of WP, my hosting company manages it. I guess if I go back to Hugo my RSS fans will be back where they were before.

  3. Hey, that’s at least 4 RSS users now!
I’m a heavy RSS user, I basically exclusively read from my reader.

However, it supports trying to fetch the full text of the site by parsing the HTML in the referenced URL. I do appreciate if that isn’t necessary anymore, though!
Full-text RSS does make it more pleasant.

  4. Hey, RSS user #5 (or so) here. I use RSS mainly to track what’s new. My RSS reader can display new articles straight from the feed (so some of them are truncated), as a web page (displaying the URL in the RSS entry), or as a web page pushed through some readability filter (to remove the glitz).

The actual content of the RSS entries is thus not so relevant (although it’s much faster if you post full articles); what matters is the list of new articles.
